"It’s undeniable that using a foreign language is a daunting feat only challenged by the bravest of souls."

We have now covered hovedsætninger (main-clauses), ledsætninger (subordinates) and hovedsætninger med inversion (main-clauses with inversion).

If you didn't go through these explanations, check them out here:

Konjunktioner / forbindeord
Conjunctions

We’ve talked about how there are certain conjunctions that belong to either main-clauses or subordinate clauses. Let’s recap a few of the most common ledsætningskonjuntioner.

Fordi (because)

Selvom (despite, even though)

Mens (while)

Når (when)

Hvis (if)

Som (which, as)

Især (especially)

These are words used to connect a main clause with a subordinate. In the previous examples, we started with a hovedsætning and joined it to a ledsætning using a ledsætningskonjunktion.

For example:

S     V       A                                K     S    A           V

Jeg laver nok en smoothie, når jeg endelig kommer hjem fra arbejde.

I’ll probably make a smoothie, when I finally get home from work.

Inversion efter komma
Inversion after comma

So, here we have the main-clause followed by the subordinate. But we could also swap these sentences around and start with the subordinate. There is, however, just one thing we would need to change.

Når jeg endelig kommer hjem fra arbejde, laver jeg nok en smoothie.

When I finally get home from work, I’ll probably make a smoothie.

Can you see the change? That’s right, two words have swapped places. This is the inversion:

Jeg laver becomes laver jeg.

En Simpel Regel
A Simple Rule

The simple answer is:

If you start a sentence with a ledsætning and/or a ledsætningskonjunktion then you invert the first two words after the common.

In other words, the verb comes first after the comma. Practice with the sentences below. Move the subordinate to the start and invert.
